Behind the Scenes: A True Immigrant Story of Life and Survival in the USA

Every book begins with a life, and every life holds a story worth telling. My journey as an author began with a dream. The dream of starting a new life in the United States, the land of sunshine, opportunity, and big plans for the future. My true immigrant survival story is more than a timeline of events. It is the foundation of my writing, the truth of an immigrant story filled with both hope and hardship.

Life had its own lessons for me

Like many immigrants, I arrived in the USA full of ambition. I imagined a life of stability, growth, and endless possibilities. I was fascinated by the Floridian lifestyle, and the American Dream felt close enough to touch. But i was alone. With two little kids and one older kid - my husband. It began with a hard and lonely start, when there was no one to catch me if I fell. I chose the wrong partner, accepted his alcoholism, and spent years in a marriage that slowly drained the color from my days. Money was scarce, and every attempt to move forward felt like pushing through mud. Illness came next, and with it, a quiet unraveling. At my lowest point, I no longer recognized the person I had become.

At times, I wondered how it was possible that I stayed with my ex-husband so long. I asked myself: Where can I find support when even the people who should be on my side are against me?

Through all the hardship, I came to a profound realization: the power was in myself all along. Each struggle taught me resilience, courage, and self-reliance. I also gained empathy for others — especially mothers and victims of domestic violence. I now understand how difficult it is to recognize abuse and how important the first step is: acknowledgment.

I even used to feel sorry for my husband. I thought perhaps he had some disorder and that things might get better if I helped him. I wanted to save him, but I realized too late that I couldn’t, because he didn’t want to change. That’s when I understood a hard truth: everyone has to save themselves.

My biggest mistake in marriage? Believing it will get better. It didn't. Not every relationship is meant to last forever. sometimes the signs are subtle, but deep down, you feel them. If you recognize any of these patterns, it may be time to pause and ask yourself: "Am I truly happy here?" Remember that walking away is not a failure. It is an act of self-love.

3 signs when your relationship is no longer healthy

  1. You feel manipulated
  2. Your partner is disrespectful
  3. You avoid discussing important issues

Writing as healing

This understanding became the driving force behind my writing. I wanted to share my journey, to show that even in the darkest moments, strength, hope, and transformation are possible.
